What to Wear for Your Boudoir Session

So you’ve booked your boudoir session.  Now the biggest question looms in your mind…what to wear?

A common mistake many make when planning their boudoir session is thinking that boudoir is only one thing: matching lingerie sets.  This is not the case at all!  Your boudoir session should be all about YOU first and foremost.  You should feel completely comfortable in what you’re wearing (unless you’re going for the uncomfortable stuff) and it should make you feel sexy!  Don’t feel like you have to fit yourself into the box of what most people are doing for their boudoir sessions.  BE YOU!  Whether that means going all out for the full lingerie set, garter belt, stockings and high heels or simply barefoot with cotton undies and a t-shirt.

The focus of your session should be you, not your wardrobe or props.  Keep patterns to a minimum as they can be distracting.  Bright colors can be as well, but sometimes bright colors truly fit certain personalities. It all depends on you. Your outfits will determine the look and feel for your session, so keep that in mind when you’re choosing.  Do you want your session to feel more dark and mysterious, or would you prefer light and airy?  If you feel like you have multiple facets of your personality consider doing multiple sessions and changing the hair and makeup as well. If you’re planning on purchasing prints or canvases for your home, consider the colors in the rooms where you want to hang things.  Choose colors that will compliment your decor.  (and make sure to measure your wall space before your session!)

Let’s dive into some wardrobe options:

Matching set

The matching lingerie set is one of our most common wardrobe options.  You can’t go wrong with matching bra and panties, and they come in endless options.  Solid black /white is classic and timeless.  The most important consideration for the matching set is to make sure it fits right.  That goes for everything on this list, actually.  If you go a size down from what you should wear, it will create bulges under the bra band and around the underwear band.  I’ve never met a woman who has referred to the “muffin top” affectionately, so be sure it fits right!  If you’re not sure, ask an associate to measure you.  Click here for our blog and a video on getting the proper fit.

Our “rut” and a SMOKING hot Lafayette Boudoir Session!!!

©2013 Breathless Boudoir | Jen & Max TromblyNo matter what job it is that you work, or what you do in life, from time to time everyone experiences getting caught in a rut.  Well, Max and I recently found ourselves in that rut.  It happens to the best of us, yes, but we’re not allowed to not rock all the time!  We have a job to do and we take it very seriously…. making women feel sexy!  We were getting bored with our studio and shooting the same stuff all the time.  We needed a change, some inspiration, that little UMPH that sparks the life into us and makes us do what we do. An amazing boudoir session with Emily!

Before and after makeover transformation©2013 Breathless BoudoirThis is Emily.  She is an absolutely amazing person and probably one of my favorite people I’ve ever met.  She’s a full time mom to her adorable little girl, Emma.  Sometimes being a mom can take over a woman’s time leaving no time for herself.  Emily came to us for her 30th birthday.  She wanted to feel beautiful again, and she wanted to scratch off a boudoir photo shoot from her bucket list.  She also wanted to give her husband an album as a gift, so it was a win win win situation.

Here’s what Emily had to say about her session,

Leah’s Boudoir Session | Baton Rouge, LA

Leah does fitness competitions and works hard on her body (and it shows)!  She is also an enthusiastic entrepreneur owning 3 local gyms.  All that on top of being a mother of two as well as a wife!   She was really fun to photograph and super sweet!

Boudoir session for a wedding gift!

Before and after makeover ©2013 Breathless BoudoirRachel was getting married and wanted something unforgettable to give her groom on the wedding day.  There really isn’t a better gift to give a groom than a book full of his beautiful bride who he is about to commit the rest of his life to.

Rachel did some fine art nude black and white photos to hang on her wall as well as some sassy other sets.

Fishnet bodysuit and a white sheet… oh my!

Charmaine’s boudoir session took place in our Baton Rouge studio.  She was a riot to work with!  We had so much fun for her session I never wanted it to end!  She is a beautiful woman with a beautiful heart and lovely curves.  She brought some great outfits including a fishnet bodysuit (take note ladies!) a loose purple blouse and a sheet.  Wait… that last one doesn’t quite count as an outfit unless you’re an ancient Roman.  Nonetheless wearing nothing but a white sheet makes a GORGEOUS set of photos for boudoir!  She did some implied nude as well as nude photos and I don’t think I could be any more in love with them!

Bra Fitting 101

As boudoir photographers we see a lot of undergarments.  A LOT.  Soooo we have an pretty good idea of what works best for photo sessions and what doesn’t.  The number one problem that we see with lingerie is FIT!  8 out of 10 women wear the wrong bra size.  If something is not fitted properly it doesn’t give you the support you need in the right places.  You either have a muffin top or your bottoms are loose and baggy (which is not flattering in the least!).  Your cups runneth over and (heaven forbid) there’s the dreaded back fat, or there’s a canyon sized gap between the bra and your breast. The most common mis-fit we see is items that are too small.  Trust me, I get it, we all want to fit into that smaller number or size!  The problem is you’re doing yourself a disservice.  If your clothes don’t fit you properly, then you end up looking larger than you actually are due to the bulges. WARNING: This post is extra spicy!

Meggan was another (very exciting) addition to the “Breathless in New Orleans” special.  Her session was extra hot!  Think 50 Shades of Grey, but even hotter!

I’ll just let the photos speak for themselves…
